Snap Agrees to $15 Million Settlement in California Lawsuit Over Sexual Discrimination

Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) over allegations of sexual discrimination, harassment, and retaliation against female employees. The CRD initiated the investigation three years ago after receiving claims that Snap Inc. failed to ensure equal pay and promotions for women during a period of rapid growth between 2015 and 2022.

The CRD alleged that female employees, particularly those in engineering roles, were discouraged from pursuing promotions and were often overlooked in favor of less-qualified male colleagues. Women also reported experiencing unwelcome sexual advances and other forms of harassment. When they spoke up, they faced negative consequences, including retaliatory performance reviews, denied professional opportunities, and termination.

The settlement requires Snap Inc. to engage an independent consultant to assess its compensation and promotion policies and retain an external auditor to oversee its sexual harassment, retaliation, and discrimination compliance. The company will also provide training to its staff on preventing discrimination, retaliation, and sexual harassment in the workplace.

Snap Inc. denies any issues with pay inequality and sexual discrimination, stating that it settled the lawsuit due to the financial burden and potential impact of a prolonged litigation. The company emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a fair and inclusive environment at Snap.

The settlement will provide compensation to affected women and aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable workplace at Snap Inc. The CRD’s director, Kevin Kish, expressed pride in California’s civil rights laws and the state’s commitment to ensuring every worker has a fair chance at the American Dream.

The settlement is a significant step towards addressing the systemic issues of gender discrimination and harassment in the workplace. It serves as a reminder of the importance of creating a fair and inclusive environment for all employees and the need for companies to take proactive measures to prevent and address such issues.
